For Local Friends

What is a Local Friend?

Being a Local Friend for Tuscaloosa International Friends (TIF) is more than just meeting someone new – it's about opening your heart to a world of cultural exchange and friendship.

As a Local Friend, you have the unique opportunity to welcome international students into your life without the commitment of them living with you. Instead, you provide them with a supportive and nurturing environment during their time in Tuscaloosa through shared meals, experiences, and traditions. As ambassadors of hospitality, you play a vital role in fostering meaningful connections that bridge cultural divides and create lifelong bonds.

Through your hospitality and kindness, you not only enrich the lives of the students you host but also contribute to building a more inclusive and interconnected community.

What can I do with my International Friend?

As a Local Friend, the possibilities for spending time with your international friend are endless! You could start by exploring Tuscaloosa's charming downtown area, grabbing a coffee or a bite to eat at one of the local eateries, or taking a stroll along the scenic Riverwalk.

For a fun outing, consider attending a University of Alabama sporting event together or even one of your own children's or grandchildren's sporting events. Back at home, you can bond over a homemade meal, introduce them to your favorite family hobbies, or host a lively game night filled with board games and laughter.

Remember, your international friend will be heavily involved in their studies and won't require too much of your time. A simple text or an invitation to dinner is all it takes to make a difference in someone's life.

Request to be matched with an International Student!

To request to be matched with an international student, simply fill out our online form with your preferences and information. We'll do our best to pair you with a student who shares your interests and hobbies, fostering a rewarding cross-cultural experience for both you and your new international friend.
